Full Description

Moated site of Kettlethorpe Hall. {1} The remains of a moat around Kettlethorpe Hall show that it is standing on the site of a medieval manor house. The modern hall is largely 19th century but does retain some earlier fabric. The earlier buildings were pulled down and rebuilt in 1863. {2}{3} The manor house was the home of the Swynfords for 150 years. Sir Hugh Swynford belonged to the retinue of John of Gaunt and after his death, in 1372, his young widow Catherine became governess to John of Gaunt's children. In 1396 Catherine married John of Gaunt in Lincoln Cathedral.{4} A watching brief undertaken at SK 8482 7560 (PRN 50091a) during the excavation of foundation trenches for an extension, revealed post medieval walls, a water cistern, a well and a lime slaking pit, all associated with the re-build of the Hall. The pit contained a sherd of 16th century pottery. {9}{10} Kettlethorpe Hall, Kettlethorpe. Extant 19th century farmstead. Loose courtyard with three sides of the courtyard formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. Located within a Church and/or Manor farm group. {11} The present hall on the site is a small country house dating to the early 18th century but incorporating earlier masonry. It had with extensive alterations and additions in about 1863. The hall is built of red brick with ashlar dressings and coursed limestone rubble. It has a hipped slate roof with a gabled central projecting bay and 4 brick wall chimney stacks. At the rear are two areas of coursed limestone rubble which are part of the earlier house. The medieval house on this site was the home of Katherine Swynford, wife of John of Gaunt. The early 18th century house was built by the MP Charles Hall who succeeded to the house in 1713. It then passed to the Amcotts family, and a copy of the design for the marble fireplace in the dining room is held in Victoria and Albert Museum, inscribed for Charles Amcotts. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {12} An area of mixed 18th and 19th century demolition debris was recorded in October-November 2015 during a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording on land to the west of Kettlethorpe Hall. This is likely to be associated with the remodelling of the manor during this time. {13}{14}
