Full Description

Largely formal gardens of about 2 hectares area with a notable 17th century terrace. The house is early 16th century in date but was rebuilt from 1673 onwards and extended in the early 18th century. The late 17th or early 18th century garden walls and terraces survive. There is an entrance drive of 150m from the north-west, between Rhododendrons and Azaleas, with gate piers at each end. Beyond, the drive forms an oval in front of the hall, with grass at the centre, and fine borders against the walls to the north and south, backed by climbing roses. The south side of this courtyard is overlooked by the northern end of the main terrace (17th century) which runs north to south for 50m, with two gazebos. The piers at the northern end were designed in 1704. There is a terrace, paved with brick, and thickly planted with herbs and aromatic plants on each side. This terrace forms the western side of a walled croquet lawn, replacing 19th century formal bedding. Borders enclose this lawn and a summerhouse on the southern side has a doorway opening onto a small walk with borders on the far side of the wall. A kitchen garden with early 18th century walls lies to the east and south-east of the hall. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
