The house has gone through several phases of alterations and additionsthroughout the centuries. The original house was built in the 17th century, shortly after Sir Drayner Massingberd bought the estate in 1638. Locally sourced and fired brick was used for its construction and the house was extended in 1660. The main part that remains of this house is the old kitchen and its large hearth and sizeable beams. Further addtions and alterations were made in the early 18th century, however, it was not until 1750 that major changes occurred to the house. Between 1750 and 1755 James Paine designed a large addtiion to the eastern part of the house. This addition was built of different brick to the rest of the house, as the bricks were imported from Hull. The façade of this new eastern wing was topped by a pediment. The pediment was removed in 1803 when another storey a further storey was added. In the 1803 works by Peter Atkinson & Son further additions were made, including a northern wing and a western extension to the east wing. Further remodelling was carried out in the 19th century. In 1927 externally visible remodelling was carried out; the third storey of the east wing was removed and replaced with a brick parapet. Further minor alterations were carried out in the 20th century. {5}
