Full Description

The walled garden at Ormsby Hall is thought to have been constructed in the second half of the 18th century, at the same time that the surrounding parkland was redesigned to its current form. It pre-dates the proliferation of walled gardens built on many estates in the early Victorian period, and is an unusual adaptation of the typical rectangular plan, with a beck flowing directly through the northern part. The garden has a large rectangular bottle-neck plan with high walls on the north, west and south sides, all built of hand-made red brick, laid in an English Garden Wall bond. The walls have flat brick coping surmounted by pantiles, and there are doors on each side. The south wall has a round arch doorway of brick headers and a recessed wooden door with Y-tracery in the upper half, flanked by shallow buttresses. There was a similar doorway opposite in the north wall but it was knocked though by a vehicle during the Second World War and was rebuilt as a large square opening with double-leaf wooden doors. At the northern end of the east wall there is a wooden door of vertical planks with long strap hinges under a square arch of brick headers. The doorway in the west wall has a segmental brick arch and a slatted wooden plank and batten door. A very small building is embedded in the south-west corner of the garden and a long range is located on the outside of the north wall, at the east end. This northern range comprises a Victorian red brick lean-to with pantile-clad roof, and a seres of lean-to sheds with four large openings and central brick piers. A further range of 20th century lean-to's lie at the west end of the north wall, although these are not included in the listing. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{4} The structures lie within South Ormsby Park, which has been designated as a Registered Park (see MLI92249). {2} A magnetometry survey was carried out in 2019 in parts of South Ormsby Park which identified several east-west and north-south oriented linear features within the Walled Garden at South Ormsby Hall. These may relate to landscaping of the garden or may predate the house and indicate the presence of a possible former trackway and possible former enclosures. {3}
