Full Description

The churchyard around the ruinous church at Walmsgate is depicted on the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map. It likely dates to at least the medieval period, when the church it served was built (see MLI93273). {1} Medieval finds were recovered in 1901, during 'exploration' of the old burial ground of the Walmsgate church. The finds included medieval pottery, window glass, an iron key, four 13th century pewter burial chalices and a pewter paten. Similar petwer chalices found elsewhere have been associated with the burial of priests. Walmsgate parish was combined with Burwell parish in 1435, and it is likely that the church and its associated burial ground went out of use after this date. The finds are in the City and County Museum. {2}{3}{4}
