Full Description
Somersby Grange was built in 1722 for Robert Burton. On stylistic grounds the design of the building has been attributed to Sir John Vanbrugh, although a drawing held in the Banks Collection at Lincoln suggests Robert Alfray may have been the architect. Additions to the house were undertaken in 1929. The building is contructed of red brick, and features a hipped slate roof behind a parapet embattled to the north with wide cornice. It is of two storeys set onto a deep plinth with cellar beneath, and has a principal north front with ground floor impost band. The outer single bays project forming mock turrets and have mock machicolations. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {1}{2}{3}{4}
Although stylistically ascribed to Sir John Vanbrugh, his involvement with the design is thought to be unlikely. The main building is constructed of red brick laid in Flemish bond, and is rectangular in plan with four corner towers, linked by a parapet with crenallations and machiolations. The original layout provided service space in the basement, principal reception rooms and kitchen on the ground floor, and bedrooms at first florr level. The principal entrance is in the north front, with a second entrance in the central bay of the south front. The single-storey brick porch was added to the north front in the late 18th century. The single-storey western wing was added in the mid to late 19th century. {5}{6}
