SOMERSBY CHURCH LANE TF 37 SW (south side) 2/72 Somersby Grange (formerly 25.10.51 listed at Manor Farmhouse) G.V. I House. 1722. Possibly by Sir John Vanbrugh for Robert Burton. Drawings in Banks Collection, Lincoln, say designed by 'Robert Alfray'. 1929 additions. Red brick. Hipped slate roof behind a parapet embattled to the north with wide cornice. Single pairs of lateral red brick stacks. Extending between each pair of stacks is a small brick panel with single small circular opening. Set onto a deep plinth. North front with ground floor impost band. 2 storeys plus cellar, 7 bays. The outer single bays project forming mock turrets and have mock machicolations. 2 segmental arched cellar openings set into the plinth. Central single storey closed porch 3 C19 steps up and with plain parapet. Rusticated round arched doorway with exaggeration to imposts, panelled and glazed C20 door with fanlight. Inner arched doorway with 8 fielded panel door, the inner roof being coved and partly vaulted. Either side are 2 round arched glazing bar sashes and in the mock turrets single circular glazing bar casements. Above is a single similar sash flanked by single narrow recessed blind panels ressembling side lights of a Venetian window. Either side are 2 similar sashes. In the mock turrets are single small rectangular glazing bar lights. To the left and set back slightly is a lower C20 2 storey single bay wing built with C18 brick. Parapet, being embattled to the side elevation. Single mock turret to the left angle. The first floor has a single segmental arched glazing bar sash. South front of 5 bays and set on a plinth, being stepped to the central 3 bays. The outer single bays with single similar mock turrets. The single central bay being wider projects, is topped with a pediment and has rusticated quoins to the ground floor with small squat clasping buttresses. Cellar with single segmental arched glazing bar light and 3 segmental arched blocked openings. Central doorway 5 steps up with panelled and glazed door, fanlight, glazing bar marginal sashes and impost/lintel bands. Either side are single segmental arched glazing bar sashes. In each mock turret is a single small round arched glazing bar sash with imposts. Above is a single central similar segmental arched glazing bar sash flanked by single blind recessed rectangular panels with impost/ lintel bands and sill band. Further left and right are single similar smaller segmental arched sashes and in the mock turrets single small circular glazing bar casements. to the right, set back slightly is the wing, this corresponds to the north front. To the left set back is a further C20 single storey 2 bay wing, built of C18 brick, on a deep plinth with 2 segmental arched glazing bar sashes. The north side with corbelling similar to machicolations and single blind segmental arched opening. Interior. Staircase hall with dentil cornice. Series of 5 semi- circular openings, most being doorways. Each opening flanked by single fielded panel pilasters, fielded panel doors either with glazed or fielded panel fanlights. The open well stair case with 2 short turns. Turned balusters with square knops. The newels with recessed panels. Moulded banister. Panelled dado with moulded band forming sill to the window on the first floor which is flanked by single rectangular niches, that on the right now incorporated into enlarged bedroom. The dining room. with elliptical arch with fielded panel pilasters and soffit and keyblock. 4 arched niches with keyblocks and continuous impost band/cornice. Fielded panel dado. Partly vaulted ceiling with bolection moulding. The doorway is similar to that of the staircase hall. Drawing room with fielded panelling extending into the turret. Dado and fluted pilasters with triglyph and guttae. Doorway similar to staircase hall. Kitchen with high dado and 2 blind arched niches. Doorway with blind fanight. Room behind with panelled dado. Cupboard with fielded and other panels and H-L hinges. Arched niches in bedrooms with arches leading to the turrets. Fielded and other panelled doors throughout. Many window seats. Cellar with fireplaces and arched openings. Listing NGR: TF3432672595
