Full Description

TO THE E AND W OF WELL HALL HOUSE (PRN 47663) IS A CHAIN OF LAKES. THE FORMAL LANDSCAPING MUST BE OF THE 1720s. LANDSCAPE PARK WITH REMNANTS OF EARLY EIGHTEENTH CENTURY FORMAL GARDEN. WELL HALL IS EARLY EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. THE ESTATE LIES EAST-WEST ALONG THE WOODED COURSE OF WELL VALE WITH OPEN GROUND IN THE EASTERN SECTION. IN THE EARLY EIGHTEENTH CENTURY THE WELL BECK WAS DAMMED AND TWO LAKES, UPPER AND LOWER WERE FORMED. THE HALL IS DUE SOUTH OF THE BRIDGE DIVIDING THESE LAKES. TO THE EAST OF WELL HALL THE OPEN LAWN SLOPES DOWN TO THE LOWER LAKE SHOWING THE OUTLINES OF EARLY EIGHTEENTH CENTURY TERRACES, PERHAPS CONTEMPORARY WITH THE CREATION OF THE LAKES. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT CHARLES BRIDGEMAN MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE DESIGN OF THE GARDEN AND LANDSCAPE. {3}
