Full Description

To the east and west of Well Vale House (MLI93274) is a chain of lakes. The formal landscaping must be of the 1720s. Landscape park with remnants of early 18th century formal garden. Well Vale House is early 18th century. The estate lies east-west along the wooded course of Well Vale with open ground in the east section. In the early 18th century the Well beck was dammed and two lakes, 'upper' and 'lower', were formed. The hall is due south of the bridge dividing these lakes. To the east of Well Vale House the open lawn slopes down to the lower lake showing the outline of early 18th century terraces, perhaps contemporary with the creation of the lakes. It is suggested that Charles Bridgeman may have been involved in the design of the garden and landscape. {1}{2}{3} Earthworks of ridge and furrow survive beneath tree cover at the western and eastern edges of the park, and are visible on LIDaR imagery. {4}
