The base and 3 feet of the shaft of re-erected cross in the Churchyard of St Mary's, Winthorpe. The head of the cross, now kept in the church, was found in 1910 in the moat of an old farmhouse 1.5 miles away. The cross has been restored as a war memorial. {1} {2}
Head of the churchyard cross with the Virgin and the Crucifixus is in the south-west aisle of the church. {3}
The monument includes the base, comprising three steps and a socket stone, the shaft, knop and head of a limestone cross, located to the south-east of the south porch. The cross is medieval in origin with modern additions, all of limestone. For a full decription see Scheduling Document 22710. {4}
Winthorpe war memorial is located in the churchyard of St Mary's Church standing to the south of the church. The memorial was unveiled in 1920 to honour the First World War fallen but further names have since been added to commemorate the Second World War dead. The memorial is a restored medieval stone cross. As a result the extended tapered shaft had a new calvary added and inscriptions cast on small brass tablets were fixed to the square stepped base. {5}
