Full Description

PRN 41414 All Saints’ Church, 'The Cathedral of the Marsh', dates originally to the Norman period, with zig zag arch pieces incorporated into the north wall of the nave. The sedilia in the chancel has round and polygonal shafts with late Norman capitals. The rest of the church is early Perpendicular and built in the 14th and 15th centuries. Decorated features are also retained. The Church was much restored in the 19th century. {1}{2}{3} Stained glass in this church dates to the early 14th century.{5} Archaeological observations in 2004 during the removal of a wooden seating platform revealed wooden floor joists, supported upon bricks, with a compacted rubble deposit. No archaeological features were identified. {6}{7} The church still possesses a large amount of its late medieval woodwork including a number of bench-ends in the north aisle, the rood screen and two parclose screens. The parclose screens are heavily decorated in Renaissance style open work with features including grotesque animal, human and hybrid figures, personal heraldry and Christian imagery all set upon a background of stylised foliage including oak and vine leaves. The heraldry elements appear to relate to William Angevine and his wife Cicely Hildyard, giving the screens a probable date range of 1553-1558. The screens have been repaired several times since their erection, and some panels are missing or replaced. {8} A parish church dating from the 12th century which underwent alterations in c.1380 to 1400, the late 17th century and minor repairs in 1865 to 1866. The bell frame from Immingham church is stored at the church. The frame dates to about 1500.
