Full Description
The Church of St Martin has a central tower of probable Anglo-Saxon date, with a Victorian chancel and nave. The church was In bad state of repair in 1980 and apparently disused. {1}{2}{3}{4}
Parish church with 10th, 11th and 13th century elements, restored in 1861 by James Fowler of Louth in the Early English Style. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5}
The tower is the oldest part of the church, the earliest architectural details are 11th century and post-Conquest, although the tall and slim dimensions suggest a Saxon foundation. The church may have originally consisted of a single cell containing a chancel and a nave with the tower at the west end, a well known pattern in Lincolnshire. If this is correct, the old nave and chancel were converted into the chancel and a new aisled nave built to the west of the tower at some time in the early 13th century. This unusual arrangement (indeed unique in Lincolnshire) was perpetuated after the restoration of the church around the tower in 1861 by James Fowler of Louth (perhaps in order to reuse the foundations) with the addition of a south transept and porch. The church is said to have been in a ruinous state beforehand. The church is built of stone with internal brick cladding. It was noted in 1999 that the church has been locked for some years, and has been abandoned. The building was in a serious state of decay in 2000, and the Norman tower looked structurally unsafe. {6}{7}{8}
Ironstone rubble foundations of the north wall of the church tower were recorded in May 2007, during archaeological monitoring of drainage replacement works. A layer of demolition debris relating to the 1861 restoration of the church was also recorded to the immediate south of the church. The church is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust, and is being repaired and restored. {9}{10}
