Full Description

The Church of St Luke is much rebuilt, but retains some Early English work, including four bay arcades, quatrefoil piers, chamfered arches and a Decorated south doorway. The porch was rebuilt by Bassett Smith in 1887. {1}{2}{3}{4} A parish church dating from the 13th century with 15th century additions. It was restored in 1887 and 1900 by Bassett Smith. Built of ashlar stone and red brick, with plain tile roofs to nave and chancel, and lead roof to south aisle. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {5} The stained glass within the church largely dates to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and includes the large eastern window, which was commissioned in 1923 to commemorate the former Rev Henry Hales. The main portion of the window shows Jesus and the Four Evangelists, but also includes many symbols relating to the life of Rev Hales, including the arms of Eton College and the Hales family, many birds and flowers (reflecting his love of nature), and crossed hammers (referencing his sporting record in hammer throwing). Another window dating from 1937 commemorates the children of Stickney, and was a gift of Rev J Denis de Vitre. A number of monuments are also located within the church, including one to Mary Lovell, who left Stickney to devote much of her life to helping the blind in Palestine and the Middle East, setting up schools and homes and caring for many people. {6}
