Full Description
PRN 40813
The earthwork and cropmark remains of a medieval village centred on TF 2841 8386. It includes a strongly defensive moated site with two courts which is probably manorial at TF 2836 8385. The moat is dry. A well at TF 2830 8385 was probably sunk on the spring which fed the moat. A second moat located at TF 2857 8396 is probably a homestead moat. It is rectangular in shape measuring 100m, from north-east to south-west, by 54m. Traces of stone foundations are visible at the south-west side of the island. Traces of old field banks and roadside quarrying can be seen south-west of the church. A road and narrow enclosures are visible on aerial photographs around TF 281 837. The road survives as a broad depression. South-east of the railway line, field banks and associated roads survive as earthworks. {1}{2}{3}
During a walkover survey, earthwork enclosures were observed at approximately TF 2846 8358.{5}
