Full Description
PRN 34999
An evaluation was carried out on land adjacent to Cross Drain, Baston, in 1996. There appeared to be a concentration of early Bronze Age domestic debris in the north-west corner of the site, implying that the main settlement area was to the north-west. Undated possible gullies, two of which were near the north-west corner of the site, were thought to be of Bronze Age date. A Bronze Age buried soil, however, only survived where it was buried and protected by a layer of alluvium. The Bronze Age soil also contained flora and fauna which indicate a marine incursion into the area, perhaps terminating the early Bronze Age occupation of the site.{1}{2}
A watching brief in 1997 revealed a sequence of natural and archaeological features. The archaeological features probably represent an area of settlement, and include a gully, pits, postholes, hearths and traces of fires. Although some of these features were undated, they were ascribed a Bronze Age date on the basis of Bronze Age occupation remains recorded in 1996 (see above). The postholes are thought to represent structures, while some of the pits were interpreted as rubbish pits. Traces of buried soil preserved beneath alluvium were also present. Finds consisted of flint tools, animal bone, pottery and burnt stone. The flint includes waste flakes suggestive of flint-knapping. The animal bone showed some evidence of butchery, with the bird bone providing evidence for hunting and/or trapping.{3}{4}
