Description

Trial trenching was carried out on circa 4ha of land adjacent to Baston Outgang Road, in order to determine the archaeological resource affected by proposed development. Specifically positioned trenches formed only a small part of the evaluated area, the majority of the exposed area being 5m by 5m standard test 'boxes' laid out on a 40m axially staggered grid, enabling standardised coverage of 1.8% of the 4ha site. Linear trenches targeted on specific features made the area exposed up to the 2% standard recommended for field evaluations. Twenty-six boxes were excavated by machine, removing topsoil and buried prehistoric soil over all but the one square metre at the south-west corner of each box. This material was left in situ for later hand excavation as a means of standardised finds control. One circa 7 litre bag of the buried soil was retrieved from each south-west corner for environmental analysis. once stripped of overburden the boxes were hoe-cleaned and a pre-excavation plan at 1:20 scale prepared. hand-excavation of a proportion of each feature-type was undertaken.{1}
