Full Description

PRN 35167 During a visit to Scullar Wood in Edenham a possible moated site was observed. It is 25m wide (east-west) by 23m internally. The ditch is about 5m wide, and about 1m deep. There is standing water in the ditch. There is a possible causeway in the south west corner, and there are earthworks within the moated area. Also, about 10m to the north of the site there is an earthwork linear feature running north-south, 3-4m wide and 0.4m deep. There is no obvious relationship with moat feature. After about 200m it veers off to the north east to join up with the drainage ditches. {1}{2} During a site visit, further to the details that were recorded previously, it was recorded that there is an internal bank on all four sides, with a declivity along the southwest facing side. The north south linear ditch follows a course parallel with the western boundary of the wood.{3}
