Full Description
A bath house and very slight vestiges of a villa were seen, and the bath house excavated in 1825, on the west bank of the river Witham at North Stoke. Much building material, pottery and two human skeletons, one just inside the south wall and one just outside, were found. The villa ruins had been visible above ground in 1670. The location of the site was subsequently lost until 1960 when exploratory excavations by a member of staff of Kesteven Training College rediscovered the bath house, which is apparently of several different periods. In 1965 the site of the 1960 excavations were still visible. The trenches had been back-filled, but there was a heavy surface scatter of Romano-British brick, tile and pot sherds. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
In the field to the west of the excavated site, linear soilmarks are visible in aerial photographs that would appear to be the remains of regular enclosures either side of a straight double-ditched linear feature. The is feature may be a trackway and runs east to west. There is evidence from the photographs to suggest that the line of the feature continues into the pasture field where the 1960 excavation took place. Similar rectilinear enclosures have been noted at the Walesby villa site and these features may relate to the excavated villa and bath house complex. {6}{7}
Site visit in September 2009, the villa site is mainly in an arable field to the west of the site. Surface finds noticed included greyware pottery and tessera as well as building stone and tile. Recent excavations have been undertaken by a local interest group. The area where the bath house is located is under pasture and earthworks are visible. {8}
Geophysical survey and trial trenching was undertaken in 2008 and 2009 on land near Grange Farm. Walls and floor surfaces of a Roman villa were revealed along with Roman artefacts. {9}{10}
