Full Description

A ROMAN BATH HOUSE WAS DISCOVERED IN 1828, SOME 60' FROM THE SOUTH BANK OF THE WITHAM, WHERE THE COURSE OF THE RIVER IS EAST-WEST, AND ABOUT 1/2 MILE SOUTH OF THE BATH HOUSE DISCOVERED IN 1824 (PRN 33930). PARTIAL EXCAVATION REVEALED THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE HYPOCAUST AND OTHER CHAMBERS. THE WALLS WERE GENERALLY OF STONE AND LIME MIXED WITH CLAY, THE FLOORS OF CEMENT. QUANTITIES OF TILES, BRICKS, TESSERAE, POTTERY AND ANIMAL BONES WERE FOUND. {1}{2}{3} IN 1965 BAIRD COULD FIND NO TRACE OF THE BATH HOUSE ON THE SOUTH BANK OF THE RIVER, BUT FOUND ROMANO-BRITISH POTTERY AT SK92692806 ON THE NORTH BANK. {1}
