Full Description

This record includes PRN34732 which has been deleted. There is a ploughed down barrow 30 yards in diameter in an arable field in Westby Lane just clear of the hedge and 78 yards from the gate into field. {1}{2}{3} A ditchless mound with a low spread, in its present state it cannot be identified as barrow. It was surveyed at 1:2500 by the Ordnance Survey. {1} The site of a ploughed down barrow was reported in 1960 by Ivan Margary. Thomas Leman's notes on Roman roads, date to about 1818, describes a road as pointing to this large tumulus in Westby Lane. This would suggest that it is a Bronze Age barrow if the Romans sighted upon it. {4}{5} An undated earthwork mound was recorded here by the National Mapping Programme. {6}
