Full Description

Emergency excavations were undertaken on the site of a Bronze Age urnfield in April 1980, by the South Lincolnshire Archaeological Unit. The excavations revealed a cemetery consisting of thirteen cremation burials in association with at least ten cremation urns. All of the cremations except one were deposited in the same manner, being placed upright in an undecorated vessel. The remaining cremation was buried in a small pit without any associated pottery. Part of a bronze bracelet was found along with a general scatter of Bronze Age pottery from across the site. {1}{2}{3} The excavations were prompted by the identification of cremated bone fragments and the recovery of 19 sherds of Bronze Age pottery in 1979, during field walking on land to the north of Ropsley Rise Wood. {4}
