Full Description

Early English to late Perpendicular church, restored in 1879. In normal use. {1}{2} This parish church dates from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries and was restored in 1879 by James Fowler of Louth. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {3} A possible construction surface and a quantity of limestone and clay rubble were recorded in June 2009, during archaeological monitoring of the excavation of new soakaways in the churchyard. It was not clear, however, whether these related to the original construction of the church or the 19th century restoration. {4}{5} Previously unrecorded elements of the church foundations were recorded during subsequent archaeological monitoring, conducted in December 2009. The identified remains included two narrow stone-built gullies, thought to have been constructed to reduce damp forming along the internal nave wall. Although the date of the gullies could not be confirmed, it was thought possible that they related to the 19th century restoration of the church. A stone platform was also seen against the chancel wall, although no indication of its date or function could be determined. {6}{7}
