It dates to about 1300. in about 1634-42 Holles recorded this effigy in the chancel and in 1845 Bonney recorded it as standing upright. The figure wears realistic yet clumsily carved mail. Some red paint is visible at the base of the slab. The effigy is a rare instance of the right hand gripping the edge of the shield. The feet are turned inwards and resting on a lion. The figure is likely to be William de Coleville who died in 1300, held a knight's fee in Swinstead in 1289 and was a patron of the church. {5}
