In normal use in 1984. {1}
A parish church of coursed limestone rubble and ashlar with lead and slate roofs. There is a 13th century two-stage tower having an embattled parapet with pinnacles. A 14th century north aisle with stepped buttresses and plain parapet and a 14th century chancel restored in 1859. Inside, the north nave arcade of 3 bays dates to about 1200 while the south arcade is 14th century. At the west end of the nave is a 13th century recumbent effigy of a knight, cross legged wearing chain mail and a surcoat. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {4}
In the north-west corner of the nave is an effigy of a knight made of limestone, its head rests on a rectangular pillow. It dates to about 1300. in about 1634-42 Holles recorded this effigy in the chancel and in 1845 Bonney recorded it as standing upright. The figure wears realistic yet clumsily carved mail. Some red paint is visible at the base of the slab. The effigy is a rare instance of the right hand gripping the edge of the shield. The feet are turned inwards and resting on a lion. The figure is likely to be William de Coleville who died in 1300, held a knight's fee in Swinstead in 1289 and was a patron of the church. {5}
