ROMAN PITS WITH POTTERY INCLUDING A LEAD GLAZED POT FRAGMENT NOW IN LINCOLN MUSEUM (1974). {1} FOUND DURING THE LAYING OF A PIPELINE DOWN THE EAST SIDE OF KING STREET ABOUT 1000 YARDS NORTH OF THE WEST DEEPING CROSS ROADS. A NUMBER OF PITS OBSERVED IN THE SIDE OF THE TRENCH. AIR PHOTOGRAPHS SHOW PITS AND DITCH SYSTEM. ROMAN POTTERY- MUCH OF IT COLOUR-COATED - OF C3-C4 DATE PICKED UP OVER THE SURFACE. 1 PIECE OF ROMAN LEAD GLAZED POTTERY FOUND. ABOUT 900 YARDS TO THE SOUTH A NUMBER OF LARGE PITS 16 FEET LONG WERE PROBABLY ROMAN GRAVEL PITS (PRN 34686). {2} POTTERY OF LATE C3 TO LATE C4 DATE. THE GRAVEL PITS ARE THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF KING STREET (PRN 34687) {3}
