Full Description
In 1139, Baldwin Fitz Gilbert established the Benedictine priory of St James at Deeping as a cell of Thorney Abbey. The house was dissolved in 1539. The old house north of the church (Priory Farmhouse) is probably built on the site of priory buildings, but see Ordnance Survey card - TF 11 SW 21 - for a possible alternative site. On the south-east side of the churchyard was a priory tithe barn, though this was destroyed in 1963 and the site re-used. The barn was built of coursed rubble and had a porch. It was 90 feet long by 20 feet wide internally. Although it has been described as 13th century it was probably 15th century in origin. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
The priory area was partly excavated by the Deepings Archaeology and History Society in 1968. Finds included painted window glass. Pottery includes Bourne D ware and Lyveden ware jugs as well as a fragment of decorated tile. {7}
