Full Description

St Michael's Church, Langtoft, is Early English to Perpendicular, of unusual plan, with the tower at the west end of the north aisle. Restored in about 1861. In normal use. {1} St Michael's Church has an ashlar-faced Early English west tower. The bell-openings are decorated, tall and shafted. The chancel and the chapel off it are also Early English. The east window dates from Edward Browning's restoration of 1859. The north chancel aisle was rebuilt by Browning. There is a Perpendicular embattled clerestory with big three-light windows. The nave roof with its angels against the wall-posts might be 17th century. The south porch with paired doric pilasters is 18th century. C. H. Fowler carried out restoration work to the nave, aisles, and west tower. {2} A parish church dating from the early 13th century with later work in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, as well as in 1737, 1780 and in 1859. It is built of coursed and squared limestone rubble and ashlar. It has a tall three stage 13th century ashlar tower, offset to north side, with a set back spire with 2 tiers of lucarnes. The rainwater hoppers to the nave roof are dated 1737 and 1780. The nave tie beam roof is 16th century. There is a 13th century chancel arch. The church retains much of its 16th century clear glass. It has a fine late 17th century octagonal pulpit. In the nave there is a large ornate chandelier with three tiers of candle holders dated 1759.
