Full Description
Langtoft Manor House (PRN 33412a), an old Hall east of the town, was once the residence of the Hyde family. W. Hyde lived here in 1682, and Ann Hyde became the wife of James II. Some time before 1816 the materials of the Hall were sold off in rooms and a farmhouse built on the site. An old gateway and an avenue of trees (the long walk) extending for two miles to King Street give some indication of the importance of the site. At the published site there are some slight amorphous earthworks, marking the foundations of the earlier Hall. {1}{2}
An archaeological evaluation by Lindsey Archaeological Services in 1991 concluded that the earthwork remains south of the 18th century farmhouse represent formal gardens dating from the 17th to 18th centuries with curvilinear raised flower beds. Considerable remains of the highly ornamental 16th/17th century orchard and kitchen garden walls survive, though in poor condition. The site of the 16th to 18th century Hall was thought to lie in the area of the present driveway and farmhouse. The farmhouse and associated structures were also surveyed and recorded (See PRN 33452 and 33453 for dovecote and fishpond; 33423 for medieval manor). {3}
The garden features appeared not to survive in c.2000. {4}
Various features related to the garden were identified during geophysical surveying in 1994. {5}
The park is recorded on the c.1880 and c.1905 Ordnance Survey maps to the east of the site of Langtoft Hall, Langtoft. {6}{7}
