PRN 33379
A small, possibly double, square enclosure, visible as a cropmark. {1}
A cropmark complex of sub-rectangular ditched enclosures, possible trackways, small square enclosures and possible field boundaries. {2}
During trial trenching at TF1278 1046 a ditch 1.2m deep by 7.5m wide was recorded. The ditch, from which pottery of a mid to late 3rd century date was recovered, had been recut, suggesting that it was in use over a considerable period of time. {4}{5}
Further work on the site has demonstrated that at least part of this cropmark complex dates from the late Bronze Age or Iron Age to the Roman period, although Roman occupation on site does not appear to begin until the mid 2nd century. Late Bronze Age or Iron Age features include a south-west to north-east aligned trackway, a ditched enclosure, a pit (possibly deliberately lined with clay), a possible pit, a posthole and a gully. Roman features include two gullies (one aligned west-north-west to south-south-east, the other aligned north to south) and a pit containing a cremation burial. Although there was a break in use between the Iron Age and Roman periods, the ditched enclosure was utilised and recut in both periods. The site is thought to be a small-scale settlement. Excavations were carried out within a 40m by 40m area centred on TF1275 1037, although the entire cropmark complex is considerably larger than this. {3}
