Full Description

PRN 33239 A quantity of pottery was found on the 4th August (somewhere between 1895 and 1897) in Eastgate near the Gas House Yard while enlarging the gas works. 'The general opinion pronounces them Roman,' but one person disagreed with this and thought they were possibly medieval. The accompanying photographs shows six large two handled bung-hole jars c.14ins high and 8ins wide. Eastgate is said to have been formerly known as Pottergate. Whites Directory records that 'the town suffered severely from two fires in 1605 and 1637 and the whole of Manor Street was burnt down in the former & the greater part of Eastgate in the latter year. {1} The jars illustrated are certainly Bourne D ware (post medieval) two handled bung- hole storage jars. {4} Evaluation of land next to 15a potters close identified post medieval deposits including two jugs dated to the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries. It is possible that a pottery kiln may have operated in the near vicinity. The evaluation was at TF1035 1993. {2}{3}
