Full Description

The Church of St Peter and St Paul, Bourne is late Norman to Perpendicular, the chancel rebuilt about 1807 and the fabric generally restored in 1870. {1}{2}{3}{4} Formerly part of the Augustinian Priory (see PRN 33233). {5} A possible blocked passageway was identified in the north wall of the north tower, during site visits conducted in 2008. {6} An investigation of the north wall of the north tower was conducted between November 2008 and June 2009, and comprised building surveys and petrological sampling. The survey recorded the presence of a former opening on the eastern side of the wall, perhaps created in the late 16th century to give access to Abbey House, which lay in the vicinity. A brick-lined niche on the external wall (currently enclosed by the boiler room) truncates medieval arcading and would appear to represent the northern side of the opening, while a vertical join, in masonry in the interior of the tower, indicates the western side of the opening at its southern limit. The opening had probably been infilled prior to the commencement of rebuilding work in 1868, since there is evidence of substantial alteration above the level of the join. Petrological analysis of samples taken from various patches in the stonework revealed a general uniformity in origin, suggesting that the medieval fabric has been reused in later alterations, or that the stone was derived from a common source. {7}{8}
