Full Description

Parks and woodland with Roman, medieval and 17th century connections. Landscaped into formal gardens in the 18th and 19th centuries. Ponds on Cringle Brook of medieval origin, main group to south of Hall enlarged in 18th century to form irregular shape 400m, now crossed by bridge dating to about 1841 carrying southern approach. Small waterfall at western tip of upper pool, and another at northern tip. Another narrower pool runs for 700m north-east of Hall. Remnants of mid 19th century formal gardens. Terraces with balustrades to west and south, forecourt to west with extensive wrought iron screen. Symmetrical lawns on west side, flanking approach drive and backed by woodland (Obelisk Plantation) and the 30m obelisk to Newton designed by Will Burn in c.1841, 250m to west of Hall. Outlines of paths remain with lawns and ornamental trees and shrubbery to south-west. In this region, c.250m and 350m from Hall, two ornamental archways dated 1676 and 1704 formerly the frontispieces from earlier stables and re-erected to south of Hall. {1}{2}{3} The grade of the park has been changed from Grade II to Grade II* following a reassessment of the park in November 2002. {4}
