Full Description

In Stoke Rochford park the line of the boundary between the former parishes of North Stoke and South Stoke is marked, along part of its line, by a low earthwork bank that survives in grassland running down to the stream to the east of the present Hall. This is probably the remains of a hedge-bank for a hedge that originally ran along the boundary of the two parishes. A very short section of shallow bank also survives to the west of the Hall gardens and the line of this former boundary can also be seen continuing approximately westwards, though a small piece of 20th century woodland, marked by a line of trees, larger and more mature than those comprising the rest of the wood. These will be former hedgerow trees that were left when the hedge was removed. The shallow bank may also survive here but was obscured by undergrowth in the woodland. It seems likely that the hedge marking the parish boundary was removed during 18th century landscaping works for the parkland that preceded the present grounds and park. {1}{2}{3}
