Full Description

SITE OF ROMAN BRANCH CANAL.TF 126 285 to TF150 275 {1}{2}{3} THE FAINTEST IMPRESSION OF A WIDE HOLLOW CAN BE SEEN IN SEVERAL PLACES ALONG THE INDICATED LINE, GENERALLY WHERE MODERN DITCHES CROSS. THERE HAS BEEN NO AUTHENTIC DITCH WITHIN THE LIVING MEMORY OF LOCAL FARMERS.{1} The southern of the two Rippingale 'minor canals' were described by Hallam in the Fenland from Roman times at TF 127 286 to TF 150 278 as the broader and longer channel. It was made up of two or three parallel ditches and was recorded by the Fenland Survey in 1985. It then was not visible to the west of Easting 13, from there it is visible on the APs but on ground it is lost in a spread of silt containing many freshwater snail shells. South of Long Drove it is visible as a silt ridge. It runs parallel to and north of TF 126 285 to TF150 275. (The Fenland survey plots it as TF1332 2834 to 1480 2780.) {4}{5} TF 127 286 to TF 150 278 and TF127 289 to TF141 284: two minor canals through Rippingale Fen. The channels have been cut and silted before the Roman settlement ( PRN 30041) was established in the later 2nd century, and the alignment of each stops at the Car Dyke. At their eastern ends they blend with a natural watercourse system, and are also continued eastwards by drove and ditch lines: the northern branch to TF160 278 and the Southern one to TF162 272. {1} The profile of one of these canals was revealed and recorded during a watching brief on the Long Drove. {6}{7}
