Full Description
Scheduled part of the line of medieval town defences of Stamford, at North Street. There is a pronounced drop in line between these gardens and the roadway behind their back wall (the buildings shown on the 25" OS have been demolished). There is no evidence that the present retaining wall incorporates any masonry from the medieval wall, but its siting is not in doubt. There is a suggestion that the Danish defences also followed this line. Elsewhere this stretch of wall-line is built across. {1}{2}
Excavations conducted in this area in 1975 revealed no traces of the former defences. Two areas were stripped, and several trial trenches excavated, but the only features identified were a number of 13th century quarries and some post-medieval post-holes. It would seem that, whilst this is the likely projected route of the former town defences, no significant remains of the structure exists in this area. The site was therefore removed from the list of scheduled ancient monuments in 2017. {3}{4}
