Full Description

PRN 30600 This church dates to the 15th century, with a 13th century tower. {1}{2} It is situated overlooking the bridge, with a burial ground to the south. The dating is uncertain; there is a tradition that it was the mother church of the town, but this may be due to later links with the borough corporation. Its location suggests a later date. It was certainly in existence by 1146 although there is no obvious earlier fabric. Most of the building is 13th century, with extensive 15th century rebuilding. In 1473 the chancel was 'ruinous'. The church contained a number of chantries and was home to the medieval gilds of St Mary and Corpus Christi. {3} Stained glass in this church, some of which is in situ, dates to the 15th century. {4} For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5}{9} A full history and description of the church and its fabric, fittings, bells and monuments is given in these sources. {6}{8}{9}
