Full Description

An early 11th century to Perpendicular church. {1}{2} A medieval church dating from the 11th century with later alterations and additions. It was restored in 1861-62 by Charles Kirk. It is built of coursed ironstone and limestone rubble, with limestone ashlar and a Welsh slate roof. The west tower of three stages in coursed rubble is 12th century, with 15th century ashlar diagonal buttresses. The north aisle of the nave was rebuilt in coursed rubble in the 19th century. The south chancel wall has an inscription on a common wall stone recording a restoration of 1702. The south door has a restored Saxon lintel with standing figures of saints under an architectural arcade. Above this is a 12th century tympanum. The central parts of the lintel and the tympanum were cut by the insertion of a pointed arch during the 13th century, but this was removed during the 19th century and an approximation of the original design substituted. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {3} Syston war memorial consists of a circular mural tablet of green marble surrounded by an unbroken bonze laurel wreath. It was placed on the southern exterior wall of St Mary the Virgin's Church. The memorial, unveiled in 1921, commemorates those who died in the First World War. {4}
