Full Description

Shrunken medieval village earthworks around the church near the Cistercian grange (30157). {1} Medieval pottery from SK843437 in Newark Museum. {2} Long Bennington is first documented in the Domesday Book, known at that time as Beninctun, or Beningtone, meaning 'the farmstead, village associated with or called after Be(o)nna'. A church and four mills are mentioned. It is further documented throughout the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. {4}{5}{6}
