Full Description
A large irregular area, maximum 300 yards by 150 yards, surrounded by a 5 feet deep ditch, 12 feet wide on the north and a 6 feet wide stream on the south-west and south. Internal banks are up to 4 feet high. There is a raised central area which looks as if it contained buried foundations. {1}
Remains of a moat that formerly surrounded a mansion supposed to have been the farmhouse of the priory at Long Bennington (30157). Situated in what was formerly the parish of Bennington Grange. {2}{3}
The monument is scheduled as the medieval moated site known as Bennington Grange. The moated site is believed to represent the remains of a monastic grange associated with a monastic house established at Long Bennington in the late 12th century. In the 15th century the grange was granted, with other lands of Long Bennington Priory, to Mount Grace Priory in Yorkshire. {5}
Long Bennington Grange was a grange of St Catherine's priory, Lincoln. In a document of 1275 there is a record of St Catherine’s holding 2 carucates of land in Long Bennington. Bennington Grange is a separate parish on the second edition OS 25 inch County Series Map (1904), it now forms the most southerly part of the parish of Long Bennington. There is within Bennington Grange parish a medieval moated site that may well be the remains of a medieval estate centre. The area of the parish of Bennington Grange is just over 2 carucates and given its size is more likely to be the grange of St Catherine’s than associated with the Long Bennington priory. The moated site would therefore be the Long Bennington grange of St Catherine’s. {6}{7}
