Full Description
Late Norman to Perpendicular. Restored 1856 and 1890. {1}{2}
Stained glass in this church dates to about 1434 AD and the 15th century.{4}
Parish church and churchyard. The earliest part of the church is the nave north arcade which dates to the late 12th century. More features were added throughout the 13th and 14th century with the final additions being the east end c. 1400 and the north chapel and north aisle in the early 15th century. The church was extensively restored, and the south porch rebuilt, in 1858 with further restorations in 1890. For further information see Listing description.
The churchyard contains a number of Listed chest tombs and headstones dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. For further details see individual Listing descriptions (see PRNs 37921, 37920, 37983, 38023, 38199, 38996 and 38997). {5}
A watching brief carried out in the churchyard uncovered no remains relating to earlier church buildings. However a concentration of stone at the northwestern corner of the west tower might relate to an earlier phase of construction or alteration. Only one in situ burial was encountered, together with a small quantity of disarticulated human bone. A fragment of worked stone was also recovered, probably part of a grave marker. {6}{7}
A memorial marble tablet and framed roll of honour to commemorate the villagers who fought in the First World War hangs in the Church. {8}
