Description
DENTON HARSTON ROAD SK 8632-8732 (south side) 10/60 St. Christopher's Well, in Denton Park 21.9.79 II* Well and grotto. 1823. Tufa. Grotto, built on the side of the lake to appear underground. Naturalistic archway leads to circular cavern with vault of tufa into which are built ammonite fossils. Beneath the wall facing the archway a small circular well from which a water filled gulley leads to the lake. Above the well an inscribed stone containing 3 verses of a romantic poem and the date of 1823 in Roman numerals. Built as a landscape ornament in the grounds of Denton Park for the Welby family.
