Full Description

PRN 23539 The settlement of Quadring was in existence by 1086, and at that time was known as Quedhaveringe or Quedhaueringe. This is derived from the Old English ‘Haeferingas’ which means the people or the followers of Haefer and was prefixed with the Old English word ‘cwead’ meaning mud or dirt. This name has its origins in the early period of the Anglo-Saxon. {8} In the Domesday book, Quadring was listed as having a manor owned by Count Alan and consisting of 1 carucate, 6 acres of meadow and 2 salt pans and was worth 10 shillings. This ownership was contested by Alfred of Lincoln who had had this land seized from him in the time of Earl Ralph. 2½ carucates in the parish of Quadring was owned by the Bishop of Lincoln. {7} IT IS THOUGHT THAT THE OLD VILLAGE CENTRE OF QUADRING IS AROUND THE CHURCH. {5} A CLOSELY DATED GROUP OF RUBBISH PITS CONTAINING C12 AND C13 POTTERY WERE FOUND ON LAND ADJACENT TO THE COWLEY AND BROWN COUNTY PRIMARY SCHOOL DURING AN EVALUATION. ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT CONFIRMED THAT MATERIAL IN THE PITS WAS DERIVED FROM HOUSEHOLD WASTE AND HABITATTION WAS CLOSE BY. THERE WAS EVIDENCE FOR CEREAL AND PULSE CULTIVATION TOGETHER WITH SHELL FISH, ANIMAL, BIRD AND FISH BONE. {1}{2} A SUBSEQUENT WATCHING BRIEF CONFIRMED THE EVALUATION RESULTS WHICH INDICATED THE PRESENCE OF NEARBY HABITATION OF C12-C13 DATE. THREE MAJOR BOUNDARY DITCHES ALIGNED APPROX NW-SE CONTEMPORARY WITH PITS FOUND DURING THE EVALUATION, WERE RECORDED IN THE NEW PLAYING AREA. ONE OF THE DITCHES WAS RECUT DURING THE LATER MEDIEVAL PERIOD. THE MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT REMAINS UNLOCATED. {3}{4}
