Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

The socketed base, 27 inches square and about 12.5 inches deep, of the 14th to 15th century 'White Cross' remains at Hunt's Gate, west of Tydd St. Mary. The base is now covered by a pile of road gravel. {1}{2} The monument includes the remains of a standing stone cross located on a roadside verge 80m north of poultry farm. Standing on the east side of the parish boundary between Tydd St Mary and Sutton St James, it represents a valuable example of a medieval boundary cross still located in its original position. It is one of rare group of boundary markers, known through early maps, which formerly surrounded the fenland parish of Sutton St James; only two other crosses in the group survive. The monument includes the base (which is now largely buried), which has a carved decoration on one side. For a full description see scheduling document 22713. {3}
