Full Description

The Church of St James dates to the 15th century although it was heavily restored in 1879 and 1894 and extended in the 20th century. The church was built of ashlar stone, rubble and red brick although it is now mostly rendered. The nave of the church was destroyed during the Commonwealth period but the tower and chancel still stand and are separately listed. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} The war memorial at Sutton St James consists of the clock which adorns the tower of St James' Church. The clock, which commemorates those who fought in the First World War, was started on Armistice Day in 1920. {6} Remnants of the north wall of the demolished nave were exposed and recorded in November 2011, during archaeological monitoring of groundworks for a new path and rainwater gullies at the church. The remnants were revealed as an east to west aligned wall, approximately 60cm wide, and constructed of large dressed limestone blocks, bonded by a pale brown sandy mortar. Stone rubble foundation deposits were also recorded alongside the existing chancel. {7}{8}
