Full Description

The thatched chapel of St Mary at Holbeach Hurn, which is mentioned in 1534, was suppressed by Edward VI and sold about 1550. A Terrier of 1653 refers to the late Hurn Chapel. The site was 'hard by' Grassland Stow, where Hurn Cross stood. A supposed Roman pot which was dug up in 1828 on the site of the cross, is probably medieval. Present whereabouts not known.{1}{2}{3}{4} In 1828 a curious Roman pitcher was dug up at Holbeach Hurn on the spot formerly occupied by a cross. This pitcher is now in the possession of the Boston Literary Institution...' (now vanished).{5}
