Full Description

A medieval wooden church with thatched nave and tiled chancel once stood in Whaplode Drove. This church was replaced in 1821 by the present St John the Baptist Church, which is believed to stand on, or very near to the site of its predecessor. {1}{2}{3}{4} The present church was completed in 1821, though was altered in 1907-8. The building was designed by Jeptha Pacey and Swansborough. It is of red brick with some ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with stone coped gables, with cross finial to the east and dentillated eaves. There is a Roman altar of limestone propped up in the porch. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5} Foundation deposits relating to the construction of the 1821 church were revealed in January 2007, during the archaeological monitoring of the installation of new drainage and the construction of a new porch. The church had been built within an extensive foundation cut, using stepped brick foundations which rested upon a raft of wooden planks. An early 20th century foundation trench relating to the previous porch was also seen. No earlier features were encountered, although fragments of human bone were noted (but not retained) in the surrounding graveyard soil (see PRN 25806). {6}{7}
