Full Description

This site comprises two occupation areas, marked by playing card shaped shallow channels within deeper ditches of small enclosures, lying on the high roddon intersection. In 1952 boys of Spalding Grammar School trial trenched, at TF27611647, by permission of the farmer, of Weston Hill the northerly playing card area. The v-shaped drainage gully, 18 inches deep, surrounded a roughly rectangular area 38 feet by 28 feet, with rounded corners, covered with charcoal up to 3 inches thick near the centre, incorporating sherds, bone, teeth and two rectangular baked clay blocks with fragments of others, and part of a hearth; this occupation level, at just over 2m OD was overlain by 6 to 12 inches of buff silt and 12 inches of soil. The silt, which had collapsed into the drainage gully from the inside, is probably the remains of walls of unbaked earth blocks of a type known in Roman and later construction. No post holes were found in the excavated area. A few sherds in the base of the topsoil may indicate a slight second occupation. The pottery from the main occupation level extends from AD80/90 to 140/150, including Samian, one stamped 'VIDICUS', probably Lezoux, 2nd century and coarse ware. {1}{2}{3} Site under crop. No evidence of occupation. Mr and Mrs Hallam were teachers at the school and the instigators of excavation.{1} The majority of Mrs Hallam's finds are in City and County Museum, Lincoln.{1}
