Full Description

Scatter 1 of sherds, disc quern and baked clay on a hillock north of the south-west limb of the levee, when closely examined during deep ploughing in 1951 divided into three areas. 1a, some 50 feet by 25 feet of soft sooty ash, full of powdered baked clay with tiny 'vessel' fragments and larger baked clay debris, underlain at some points by clean grey clay; and 1b just south, a platform of clean silt 7 feet wide edged to the east by the foundations of a wattle and daub wall (plastered to the west) and to the west by a 2 feet clay wall footing. On the south-east side of the curve of the main levee scatter 2 included vessel fragments, baked clay, some sherds, rectangular clay blocks with a high straw content and at 3 a flanged slab of calcite gritted ware with oblique finger markings. The bulk of the pottery is plainly late 1st century to early 2nd century starting in about AD80. {1}
