Full Description

PRN 20310 DURING THE NEOLITHIC PERIOD THE PROMONTORY WAS SUBSTANTIALLY OPEN GROUND AND WITNESSED SOME FORM OF SETTLEMENT ACTIVITY. DURING THE EXCAVATIONS AT LITTLE DUKE FARM SOME 1150 FLINT IMPLEMENTS AND WASTE PRODUCTS OF A BLADE-BASED INDUSTRY HAVE BEEN RECOVERED FROM THE BURIED SOIL, FOUND PRESERVED BENEATH THE PRIMARY MOUND, AS WELL AS NUMEROUS SHERDS OF VEGETABLE AND FLINT TEMPERED POTTERY AND TWO GROUPS OF INTERCUTTING PITS. THE LATTER MAY REPRESENT PRE- MONUMENT (BARROW CEMETERY 20308) GROUND CLEARANCE OF THE AREA. IN ADDITION, RAPID MAGNETOMETER SURVEY OF THE SURROUNDING PASTURE FIELD REVEALED NUMEROUS ARCHAEOLOGICAL ANOMALIES INCLUDING PITS, GULLIES AND DITCHES, SOME OR ALL OF WHICH MAY BE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS NEOLITHIC OCCUPATION ACTIVITY. THE FIRST MONUMENT PHASE WAS STARTED IN LATE NEOLITHIC/ EARLY BRONZE AGE TRANSITION PERIOD. THESE FEATURES COMPRISED A ROUGHLY OVAL ARRANGEMENT OF POST HOLES, WHICH MAY REPRESENT A TEMPORARY MORTUARY STRUCTURE. {1}{2}{5}
