Monument record MLI20207 - ROMANO-BRITISH/EARLY SAXON SITE

Summary

ROMANO-BRITISH/EARLY SAXON SITE

Type and Period (2)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

TAKEN ALONE THERE WOULD NOT BE ENOUGH ROMAN SHERDS TO WARRANT THEIR DESCRIPTION AS A SITE, BUT THEY MIGHT WELL BE TAKEN AS EVIDENCE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF A SITE BURIED BENEATH THE SILT. THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE CONTINUITY OF SETTLEMENT FROM ROMAN TO SAXON TIMES. THIS IS REINFORCED BY THE LOW PROPORTION OF COLOUR-COATED RB POTTERY AND THE ABSENCE OF LATER GREY WARES, SUGGESTING ABANDONMENT OF THE SITE COMPLEX BEFORE THE END OF THE ROMAN PERIOD. {1}, HTM 3.5M
