Full Description

THERE ARE SOME POSSIBLE EARLY SAXON SHERDS IN THE PREDOMINANTLY ROMAN SCATTERS OF MATERIAL IN THIS AREA, WHICH IS UNUSUAL IN THE FENS. HOWEVER, THE UNUSUALLY LOW NUMBERS OF POSSIBLE EARLY SAXON SHERDS CASTS DOUBTS ON CONTINUITY OF SETTLEMENT FROM ROMAN TO SAXON TIMES. THIS IS REINFORCED BY THE LOW PROPORTION OF COLOUR-COATED RB POTTERY, AND THE ABSENCE OF LATER GREY WARES, SUGGESTING ABANDONMENT OF THE SITE BEFORE THE END OF THE ROMAN PERIOD. IT SEEMS THAT THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY THAT WHERE ROMAN SITES LAY JUST BENEATH THE SURFACE OF THE SILT (AS THIS ONE APPEARS) THEY PRODUCED A TOPOGRAPHICAL OR VEGETATIONAL ANAMOLY WHICH ATTRACTED SETTLERS IN THE EARLY SAXON PERIOD. {1}
