Full Description

The medieval settlement of Surfleet is mentioned in the Domesday book. {1} At TF 251 283 is a site examined by the Boston and South Lincolnshire Archaeology Group in 1963. Town Field is located near the church and was irregular and uneven. It was ploughed in about 1963 having been under grass for many years. Fieldwalking showed that much modern and nineteenth century rubbish had been dumped to fill in the depressions, but in the higher areas of silt were two fairly concentrated scatters of Stamford ware. The sherds of other medieval pottery were relatively few but there was also one rim of Thetford ware storage jar and a few pieces of St Neots ware. A find which might also be connected with the pottery was a small whetstone of mica schist which should be an early type. {2}
